Gomel oblast is situated in the south-east of Belarus and borders on Bryansk oblast of Russia as well as Kiev, Chernigov and Zhitomir oblasts of Ukraine.

The total area is 40,400 km², i.e. one fifth of the country’s territory. The oblast comprises 21 regions and 4 Gomel districts, 17 towns, 18 townships and 2,608 villages.

The climate is temperate continental with warm summers and mild winters. The average temperature in January is 6 ºC below zero and 18 above zero in July. The average annual wind velocity is about three meters per second. The annual precipitation varies between 550-660 millimeters.

Oscillating between 191- 209 days the Gomel oblast vegetation period is one of the longest in the country. The climate is favorable for cultivation of sugar-beet, corn, early-season varieties of grape.

The largest navigable rivers are the Dnepr, Sozh, Berezina, Pripyat. There are many lakes in the oblast as well.

One third of the territory is covered with forests.

Natural conditions in Gomel oblast provide pretty favorable environment for development of all spheres of human activities. The flat relief promotes development of towns, farming, manufacture and transport connections.
